Advanced Pediatric Life Support (APLS)

This two day intensive learning experience developed by the AAP is designed to provide core knowledge in paediatric emergency medicine for health care providers and teach how to assess and manage critically ill children in the office setting and during the first hours in the emergency department.

The APLS Course focuses on the evaluation, diagnosis and initiation of treatment for many paediatric medical and surgical emergencies during the time the patient’s condition is being stabilized in the clinic or emergency department.

Course format includes case-based learning in a small group format and emphasizes hands-on skill practice in a hi-fidelity simulated environment. Participants who attend the course and pass the final exam will receive a certificate.

Please note that this is a Paediatric Emergency Medicine course, not a Paediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) course, which is specifically directed toward the emergency management of paediatric patients approaching or already in cardiopulmonary arrest.

The APLS Course complements, but does not replace the American Heart Association/American Academy of Paediatrics sponsored Paediatric Advanced Life Support Course. Most participants find it helpful to review PALS before taking this course. Don’t have PALS? Contact the Michener Institute.

This lecture will present a dramatic case demonstrating the deadly potential of prescription opioids to children. It will examine the current epidemic of prescription opioid misuse and abuse, and it will examine some of the root causes that lead to the problem. Finally, it will try to inspire clinicians to work together to develop solutions to this leading cause of injury-related mortality.

Workshop 4.  You’ve learnt the skills…now apply your knowledge!

This 3-hour workshop offers medical professionals the rare opportunity to apply the knowledge they gain in this session by implementing their skills in emergency airway management into case-based simulations. Learn how to use and gain experience with essential airway adjuncts, intubation tools and advanced technological advancements, and then put it all together in simulated scenarios.

 

After this session, participants will be able to:

 

  • Apply their knowledge of emergency airway management into the paediatric setting
  • Identify airway adjuncts and tools available to the paediatric airway and practice appropriate implementation via simulation
  • Discuss the differences between technological assistive devices and apply your knowledge to associated specific intubation techniques
  • Develop appropriate paediatric airway management plans based on assessment and resources.

 

This workshop is 3 hours.  Therefore, if you’re attending this workshop, you do not need to choose another workshop for the afternoon sessions.  Limited to 21 people maximum.

Since such events are infrequent, regular updates and practice is required to maintain the skills and competency of the practitioner.  This simulation focused session provides opportunities to practice a team approach to managing such situations.
