SickKids Paediatric Emergency Medicine Point-of-Care Ultrasound Pre-Conference Workshop

Are you a pediatric healthcare professional eager to sharpen your point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) skills? Join us for a dynamic, one-day workshop designed to boost novice and intermediate users to a new level of confidence and competence in point-of-care ultrasound imaging. This workshop is designed for pediatricians (community-based and hospitalists), pediatric emergency physicians, trainees, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and allied health professionals who care for children. It is especially suited for novice to intermediate POCUS users seeking to build practical skills in pediatric-focused ultrasound applications. You’ll have the opportunity to explore a range of POCUS machines and pricing models, discover practical billing strategies for Ontario, and have an opportunity to ask POCUS experts for their tips and tricks for incorporating POCUS into clinical practice.  

This state-of-the art educational experience will include small group teaching, hands-on scanning and immersive simulation.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe the principles of Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) and summarize its current role in Pediatrics and Pediatric Emergency Medicine (PEM).
  • Apply core Pediatric POCUS applications in clinical scenarios using a case-based approach.
  • Evaluate logistical considerations related to Pediatric POCUS, including equipment selection, vendor engagement, and Ontario-specific billing practices.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and interpret findings from high-yield Pediatric POCUS applications, including:
      • Basic operations and knobology
      • Lung ultrasound
      • Cardiac and IVC assessment
      • Skin and soft tissue evaluation
      • Vascular access guidance
      • Bladder, kidney, and rectal diameter assessment

Who Should Attend:

  • Pediatricians and pediatric hospitalists, pediatric trainees, pediatric emergency physicians and trainees, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and allied health professionals
  • Beginner to intermediate POCUS users looking to improve or expand their skill set, specifically in pediatric POCUS applications 

Pre-Program requirements: Participants will receive access to pre-learning materials through a modular online curriculum (high-yield video and slide-based lessons covering POCUS fundamentals) 

Certificate of Completion: Issued upon successful completion of the program.

SickKids Paediatric Emergency Procedural Sedation Program

This course is limited to 21 participants

The SickKids Paediatric Procedural Sedation Program provides a comprehensive approach to assessment and management of children undergoing procedural sedation in the emergency setting. Participants of this program will acquire working knowledge of appropriate sedative and analgesic agents, gain skills to manage potential adverse events and practice procedural sedation in a simulated setting. Through hi-fidelity simulation scenarios, participants will gain hands-on experience in administering sedative and analgesic agents, recognizing and managing adverse events and applying best practices in real-time clinical decision making.

Learning Objectives:

  • Outline paediatric emergency procedural sedation guidelines and apply them to children in the emergency setting.
  • Evaluate a child’s eligibility for procedural sedation in the emergency department

  • Choose appropriate sedative and analgesic agents for emergency procedural sedation and identify potential adverse reactions.

  • Identify the adverse events that may occur with sedation of pediatric patients and describe appropriate interventions required for the management of actual or potential complications.

  • Practice procedural sedation in a simulated setting.

  • Paediatric Emergency Physicians, Family Physicians, Emergency Physicians, Paediatricians
  • Nurses, Nurse Practitioners, Respiratory Therapists, Physician Assistants, Residents

Pre-Program requirements: Paediatric Emergency Procedural Sedation Handbook (will be emailed in advance to participants)

Certificate of Completion: Issued upon successful completion of the program and multiple-choice examination with a minimum score of 70%.

Paediatric Emergency Procedural and Resuscitation Course (PEPRC)

This course is limited to 24 participants.

This pre-conference course delivers advanced skills in an innovative ‘flipped classroom’ format. Using deliberate practice and competency-based training, participants will be able to achieve mastery in these critical Paediatric Emergency Medicine (PEM) skills.

Learning Objectives:

  • Discuss components of effective team training including role definition, communication, leadership and situational awareness (Crisis Resource Management or CRM).
  • Recognize and manage acute paediatric emergencies including children presenting with shock, neonatal, cardiac and CNS emergencies.
  • Practice paediatric emergency procedural skills including airway management, percutaneous needle tracheostomy, intraosseous insertion (tibia and shoulder), and chest tube insertion.

How to Navigate the Website:

There are 3 Sections: CRM, Resuscitation, Procedures

  • CRM (Crisis Resource Management) content will cover core topics in team functioning and will be reinforced by the morning lecture.
  • Procedures and Resuscitation core content will be available and accessed prior to the conference. Each module will provide key learning materials, videos, clinical guidelines, and competency checklists.
